It only takes a few minutes to make with just a handful of ingredients.
What is a Caprese salad?
A Caprese salad is a simple Italian salad that is usually served as an antipasto (starter). It consists of mozzarella, basil, and tomatoes. It’s also dressed with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. The red, white, and green colors in the salad represent the Italian flag.
Ingredients you will need for your Caprese salad:
- Fresh mozzarella
- Fresh basil
- Heirloom Tomatoes
- Extra virgin olive oil
- Balsamic glaze
- Kosher salt
- Fresh ground pepper
When making a Caprese salad, fresh ingredients are best to use. Fresh mozzarella tends to be much softer and buttery than regular mozzarella cheese. Using fresh basil and heirloom tomatoes really makes the salad much tastier too. It tastes even better when heirloom tomatoes are in season. The sweetness of those juicy heirloom tomatoes from the farmer’s market will make your mouth water! You can also add, peaches, cherries, grilled chicken, or whatever you think would go well with it.
Lastly, top it off with a balsamic glaze and some extra virgin olive oil and you have yourself a great salad! You can simply buy the balsamic glaze from the supermarket, but you can also make it at home by reducing balsamic vinegar. After reducing the balsamic vinegar it will look like chocolate fudge. The glaze will give a hint of sweetness. Try this simple salad! It’s tasty, quick to make, and will impress your family and guests.
